The neighboring country of Ukraine has taken in many refugees since the Russian attack in 2022 – a challenge for the poorest country in Europe.
Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe. The rural population, women, youth, and ethnic minorities among the approximately 2.5 million inhabitants are particularly affected by poverty. Many people have left the country in search of better job opportunities and living conditions – it is estimated that about one-third of the Moldovan population lives abroad either temporarily or permanently.
Since the Russian attack on Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova has taken in about 120,000 refugees from the neighboring country by July 2024 – more than any other country relative to its population size. The political and economic consequences of the Russian war of aggression in the region significantly hinder the implementation of reforms and the maintenance of social peace.
Immediately after the Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022, action medeor initiated its first aid projects not only within Ukraine but also in the neighboring country of Moldova. Together with partner organizations, our assistance in Moldova focuses both on the refugees from Ukraine and on the local host population, who are already in a strained economic situation. The projects include equipping refugee shelters, distributing relief supplies, and providing psychosocial and medical support.
