Emergency aid Sudan

The people of Sudan are suffering from a brutal civil war, severe natural disasters and a dramatic shortage of food and medicine. We have been delivering medical supplies to the country since 2010.

Major crisis, little attention

The nationwide civil war in Sudan triggered the largest displacement crisis in the world. The majority of medical facilities in the country are currently not in operation, while the need for medical treatment is extremely high. Natural disasters, such as severe flooding in August 2024, are further exacerbating the misery. action medeor is therefore delivering urgently needed medicines and medical supplies to trusted partners in the country.

Healing is in short supply

In the Nuba Mountains alone - where the Mother of Mercy Hospital we support is located - hundreds of thousands are seeking protection. Although there is currently a fragile ceasefire in the Nuba Mountains, the new war has isolated the region. Since then, the general supply situation for the population and internally displaced persons in the region has deteriorated dramatically. Dr Catena has been practising as head physician at the Mother of Mercy Hospital for many years and has clear words for the seriousness of the current situation: ‘The need for medical treatment has increased enormously, while at the same time our resources are severely limited. Without donations and aid supplies, we will not be able to maintain operations. Above all, we urgently need medicines and consumables such as bandages to be able to continue treating people.’

A hospital for hundreds of thousands

The hospital is crucial for healthcare provision in a region larger than Baden-Württemberg. Many illnesses can only be treated here and patients in need sometimes have to walk for days to find a cure. The hospital can accommodate around 500 inpatients. The demand is so great that many have to share a bed. Dr Catena's medical team defies this enormous need and burden with tireless confidence. The most frequently treated diseases include malaria, pneumonia and gastrointestinal infections, which are often fatal if left untreated. The hospital also has a leprosy ward and a prosthesis workshop. Due to the high level of mine contamination, Dr Catena also treats many people who have lost arms or legs.

Help is on the way

action medeor is continuing its support for the people in Sudan who are suffering from these crises through no fault of their own. An aid delivery for the hospital in the Nuba Mountains is currently being prepared. We are reaching other regions in Sudan through cooperation with aid organisations such as MOAS and INTERSOS. An aid delivery with medical supplies worth around 100,000 has recently arrived in the capital and will be distributed from there to the health centres still operating in the region. Another large consignment was packed at our premises in Tönisvorst and is currently on its way to Sudan.

More aid is urgently needed to secure supplies and reach even more people. With your donation, you are giving the gift of health and helping us to expand our commitment in Sudan and other crisis regions around the world.
