On the run: Refugees worldwide

In 2024, there will be almost 117 million refugees worldwide - the highest number ever recorded.

The causes for the dramatic rise in refugee numbers are manifold: war and violence, persecution and climate disasters such as drought, flooding or hurricanes all play a role. action medeor is committed to the well-being of refugees - with a focus on medical care.

Where do people flee to?

68 million internally displaced people: More than half of the world's refugees do not cross their country's borders and become internally displaced within their own country. For example, in Syria, Yemen, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan.

Shelter in neighboring countries: 69 percent of all refugees seek refuge in a neighboring country. Refugees from Afghanistan, Syria, Venezuela and the Palestinian territories, for example, are largely accommodated in Iran, Turkey, Colombia and Jordan.

In numbers: The situation in action medeor's countries of operation

action medeor is active in many countries where people are fleeing or seeking refuge. Examples include the following countries:

  • Ukraine: Since the outbreak of war in February 2022, the number of refugees has also increased within Europe. More than 10 million Ukrainians are currently on the run. Of these, 3.6 million are being accommodated within the country and 6.5 million within Europe.
  • Syria: Civil war has been raging in Syria since March 2011. Since then, millions of Syrians have been displaced - 7 million as internally displaced persons within the country, some of whom have been living in makeshift tent camps for years.
  • Somalia: Drought, monsoon-like rainfall and violent conflicts have dominated the lives of people in Somalia for decades now, forcing many to flee. 3.9 million people are displaced within the country, 850,000 people have left Somalia in search of protection.
  • Sudan: Around 11 million people are displaced within Sudan - triggered, among other things, by the renewed outbreak of civil war in 2023.
  • DR Congo: The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a place of refuge for many refugees from neighboring Burundi on the one hand and is also struggling with its own refugee movements within the country, which are triggered by clashes between armed groups and the Congolese army, among other things. Almost seven million Congolese are on the run within the country.
  • Yemen: Yemen has been at war since March 2015. 80 percent of the population is dependent on humanitarian aid. Much of the country's infrastructure has been destroyed and over 3.6 million people are displaced within their own country.
