Key to a stable healthcare system Midwives, pharmaceutical staff, medical technicians - without healthcare staff, there is no health. Unfortunately, there is an absolute shortage of medical staff in many countries. A healthy start to life Mothers-to-be receive no medical support during their pregnancy, and often not at birth either. This is the standard in many regions around the world, especially in rural areas. This leads to extremely high mortality rates for mothers and babies after birth. action medoer therefore supports the training of midwives and obstetricians, for example in Sierra Leone. © action medeor / Evelyn Fey (www.feyproductions.de) Joyce is one of the first students to graduate from the midwifery school in Sierra Leone. In the video, she talks about what motivated her to become a midwife and what is special about training at the midwifery school. First successes Since the midwifery school opened in 2017, the number of trained midwives in the country has risen significantly: Back then, there were just under 300 midwives across the country; now there are more than four times as many: 1,400 midwives now support expectant mothers before, during and after birth. Medical technology can save lives We often see medical equipment standing around unused or broken in hospitals because there is a lack of staff who can install, operate, maintain and repair it. Yet this equipment can save lives when it comes to diagnosing illnesses, for example. And without a diagnosis, no medical treatment is possible. With the action medeor branches in Malawi and Tanzania, action medeor is committed to training hospital staff in the use of medical equipment. This is because there are many counterfeits in circulation, which are sold at high prices and have dangerous side effects. By training pharmaceutical personnel, action medeor is counteracting this. "The knowledge of clinical pharmacy makes it easier for me to recognize, assess and monitor patients to prevent unwanted side effects. I am now part of the team that conducts clinical visits, where I am allowed to interact with patients freely and within a team."
