Thousands of people are feared dead, ten thousands have been injured – and the numbers continue to rise. action medeor is launching initial relief efforts. Venezuela in crisis after earthquakes! A powerful double earthquake has shaken Venezuela, causing widespread damage in cities as far as the Brazilian Amazon. In the capital, Caracas, many buildings have collapsed, and significant damage has also been reported at the airport. About 10.000 people are still missing under the rubble. According to initial estimates, thousands of people have died and more than ten of thousands have been injured. A much higher number of fatalities and injuries is feared. The quakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, are believed to be among the strongest earthquakes of the year. Venezuela’s President, Delcy Rodríguez, has declared a state of emergency. action medeor provides funding for relief efforts Our aid organization based in Tönisvorst is currently assessing the situation on the ground in Venezuela and is consulting with local partners. action medeor is providing €50,000 for humanitarian measures in the Latin American country. Initially, the local procurement of urgently needed relief supplies is being examined; in addition, deliveries from our warehouse in the Lower Rhine region are being prepared. "From experience, we know that in situationslike this, it is the most basic needs that matter most:medical care, protection, water, food and hygiene.“ Sid Peruvemba Spokesperson for the Executive Board of action medeor In cooperation with the German organization ISAR and other actors of the EMT network (Emergency Medical Teams), action medeor is currently preparing a shipment of approximately 1.3 tonnes consisting of 98 items for direct dispatch to Venezuela. On Friday (26 June 2026), action medeor dispatched its first relief shipment, which has now arrived in the earthquake-affected area. THW relief workers received the aid supplies upon arrival. The goods were handed over to Hospital San José in La Guaira, which is located in the heart of the earthquake zone. action medeor remains in close contact with local partners on the ground to assess further needs. The earthquake survivors will urgently require assistance and depend on access to safe shelter, clean water, and essential medicines. As a result, action medeor has sent three further relief shipments, which have since reached Venezuela and are helping to strengthen the ongoing response efforts. Our work in Venezuela so far For many years, the medical aid organization has been active in the region and has already implemented several humanitarian projects together with local partners. The situation in Venezuela is generally considered tense. Years of armed conflict in the region have forced many people to flee to neighbouring countries such as Colombia. Many Venezuelans - often living without regular residency status - settle in poor urban areas, where, despite a shared language, social tensions and xenophobia are on the rise. Together with its partners, action medeor is already supporting indigenous communities and smallholder farmers in three remote regions of Venezuela and aims to strengthen these areas in the long term by improving food security. To this end, training sessions and workshops on agricultural activities are being conducted for more than 3,400 people in these regions.
