Increasing demand A welcome development: Life expectancy is increasing in many countries thanks to the expansion of healthcare infrastructures. However, this is also accompanied by an increase in the number of cases of cancer, heart disease and strokes. This is driving demand for medical technology and medical technology expertise. We not only provide the appropriate equipment, but also help to adapt the devices to local conditions and ensure that the devices can remain in operation in the long term, for example by providing training for specialist staff. "Training is important to improve the quality of services in our hospital. Training on calibration and quality control for biochemistry is particularly necessary." Brian NjobuuLaboratory manager at Mulanje Mission Hospital and participant in a biochemistry training course Comprehensive approach Thinking through these challenges and thus ensuring the long-term, sustainable use of technology is the declared aim of action medeor's steadily growing medical technology division. In long-term projects, healthcare facilities are equipped with medical devices ranging from blood pressure monitors, stethoscopes and ultrasound equipment to oxygen concentrators and blood analysis devices. In addition, training courses are held, technicians are trained in installation and maintenance, and clinical laboratories are equipped with diagnostic equipment and necessary consumables such as reagents. The needs & solutions of action medeor 70% of medical equipment in hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa is broken or not being used. There can be various reasons for this: There is a lack of staff to operate, maintain and repair the equipment. There is a lack of infrastructure or accessories to operate the equipment, such as a power connection or a computer. Donated equipment often does not meet local needs. In Tanzania and Malawi, this is exactly where action medeor comes in: The medical technicians from action medeor in Malawi and Tanzania help with the installation, initial use, maintenance and repair of the equipment. Medical training courses are offered for hospital staff. Medical devices and their accessories are supplied as needed. Milestone: Own reagent production A special milestone that enables local procurement and makes Tanzania's healthcare system a little more independent was achieved in September 2023: At the Kibaha site, action medeor Tanzania opened the first production facility for hematology reagents in East Africa. Reagents are needed in the laboratories to carry out blood analyses. Until now, these had to be regularly imported from Asia - with high costs, long transportation routes and a permanent dependence on international supply chains. The reagents "made in Tanzania" reduce these problems and help to ensure that vital blood analyses do not fail due to supply bottlenecks. The local production of reagents in Tanzania makes an important contribution to making the Tanzanian healthcare system more independent. © action medeor/B.
