The ongoing humanitarian and economic crisis in Venezuela has forced millions of people to leave their homes - often due to a lack of food, medical care, and safe prospects for the future.
The humanitarian situation in Venezuela remains extremely critical and continues to be classified by international organizations as a complex humanitarian emergency. Despite a slight economic recovery in certain sectors, a large share of the population continues to live in poverty. Food insecurity, unreliable access to safe drinking water, and the near collapse of public services shape daily life for many people. Millions of households are forced to skip meals or rely on low‑quality food.
The healthcare system remains severely overstretched. Many hospitals lack sufficient staff, medicines, medical equipment, as well as reliable electricity and water supplies. Years of high inflation and low wages have led to the migration of tens of thousands of doctors, nurses, and other skilled health professionals. As a result, many people do not receive adequate medical care, even for treatable conditions.
Due to this prolonged crisis, millions of Venezuelans have left their country. Most refugees and migrants are living in Latin America and the Caribbean, particularly in Colombia, but also in Peru, Brazil, Chile, and Ecuador. Venezuela is now considered one of the countries with the largest displacement crises worldwide.
action medeor is involved in a wide range of measures to support the people in Venezuela and in neighboring countries: We support the supply of medicines to patients in remote regions of the country. Since 2023, action medeor has also been implementing a program with three local partner organizations to secure food supplies using locally proven methods and to spread knowledge of these methods among the population. In addition to these measures in the country itself, action medeor also supports refugees from Venezuela in neighboring Colombia.
