The funds are intended to be used for the medical care of people following the earthquake, and action medeor is already in contact with local partner organizations on the ground. “In the first hours after the earthquake, we are still working to gain a clear picture of the situation on the ground, but from experience we know that in such situations, it is the most basic needs that matter: medical care, protection, water, food and hygiene,” reports Sid Peruvemba, Spokesperson of the Executive Board at action medeor. “That is why we are currently assessing local procurement options for relief supplies while also preparing deliveries from Germany,” Peruvemba adds. action medeor has been active in Venezuela for years and is implementing various humanitarian projects together with local partner organizations. At the same time, the “pharmacy of the world,” as action medeor is also known, regularly supplies medical facilities in the country with essential medical goods. “Even before the earthquake, the supply situation for medicines and medical products in Venezuela was already very strained; the natural disaster has further worsened the situation,” Peruvemba explains. Following the earthquake, initial preparations are now being made at the medical warehouse in Tönisvorst for relief shipments that are urgently needed in Venezuela. “We are therefore preparing for different relief scenarios in parallel by supporting our partners on the ground and at the same time initiating shipments of relief supplies from Germany, which will be used in the second phase of emergency response,” explains Sid Peruvemba.
