Afghanistan

The crisis in Afghanistan has worsened considerably since the Taliban seized power in August 2021. The humanitarian situation in the country is one of the worst in the world.

A dramatic development with serious consequences

The majority of the population lives in poverty and many inhabitants are dependent on humanitarian aid. Millions of people, including many children, suffer from hunger and malnutrition. In addition, there are systematic restrictions on women's rights. Basic healthcare is also on the verge of collapse. But that's not all: natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods hit the already battered country time and again, further exacerbating the plight of the people in Afghanistan.

In numbers: The situation in Afghanistan

  • 97% of the population lives in poverty
  • 23.7% of the population is dependent on humanitarian aid
  • 30.1% of people suffer from malnutrition
  • About 13 million people suffer from acute famine

Support for health structures and emergency aid after natural disasters

For decades, action medeor has maintained a link with hospitals and health facilities in Afghanistan, which are regularly supplied with medicines and medical supplies from Tönisvorst. As the "emergency pharmacy of the world", action medeor provides medical care for people in urgent need of support.

In addition to these long-standing partnerships with local healthcare facilities, action medeor also provides aid in acute emergencies and natural disasters: Examples include emergency relief measures following the severe flooding in spring 2024 or after dramatic earthquakes in June 2022. Together with local partner organizations, we identify the most urgent needs of people in disaster regions and help with food, hygiene kits or household items, among other things.
