Healthcare for earthquake-affected families in Afghanistan

On August 31, 2025, a devastating earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, particularly affecting the provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar near the city of Jalalabad on the Pakistani border.

More than 2,200 people lost their lives, and over 4,000 were injured. Numerous houses, roads, and public infrastructures were destroyed. In total, around 1.3 million people have been directly or indirectly affected by the earthquake damage. In the mountainous regions of Kunar, many families continue to live in tents or temporary shelters without access to basic health services. Regional hospitals are damaged or overwhelmed. Those most at risk include people with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Additional challenges include psychosocial stress, overcrowded shelters, and disrupted water and sanitation systems, all of which significantly increase the risk of infectious diseases. The geography of Nurgal District further complicates the delivery of aid. The mountainous terrain, remote villages accessible only by footpaths, and the earthquake damage and landslides make it extremely difficult for affected communities to access healthcare services.

Therefore, Action medeor, together with its Afghan partner organization Union Aid and in close coordination with the Ministry of Health and other humanitarian actors, is deploying a mobile medical team. This team brings medical professionals directly to the most affected communities, providing life-saving trauma care, primary healthcare services, maternal and child health care, and psychosocial support. An integrated referral system ensures that patients requiring advanced medical care can be transported to hospitals. In addition, the project offers nutrition screenings, vaccinations, and health and hygiene education.
