Emergency aid for the victims of floods in Afghanistan

According to the United Nations, more than 23 million people in Afghanistan – over half of the population – will require humanitarian assistance in 2024. One of the reasons for the widespread need is recurring natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes in the region.

In 2023, nearly 400 earthquakes shook the country, including three tremors with a magnitude of 6.3 in Herat province. Since then, Afghanistan has been hit by new disasters such as flash floods, heavy rains, and further earthquakes. These recurring disasters have caused fatalities, displacements, widespread damage to homes and infrastructure, and significant agricultural losses.

Together with the local partner organization Union Aid, action medeor is providing emergency relief in the affected region: distributing emergency packages to affected families and providing medicines and medical equipment to healthcare facilities.

Distribution of Food and Relief Packages

Households particularly affected by the recent floods are being supported in coping with the acute emergency through the distribution of various relief items. These include food packages, hygiene kits (including soap, washing powder, toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoo, and menstrual pads), as well as renovation kits to repair damaged buildings. These include a wheelbarrow, a pickaxe, a shovel, a saw, a hammer, a bucket, and other tools.

Support for Healthcare Services

In addition to distributing to the most affected households, healthcare facilities in the region are being equipped with medicines and medical supplies. This support enables Union Aid's medical team to maintain high-quality healthcare in the communities most severely affected by the recent floods.
