On September 8, 2023, Morocco was struck by a severe earthquake.

It was the most powerful earthquake in the region in over 100 years, resulting in the loss of nearly 3,000 lives, thousands of injuries, and extensive damage to large areas. Immediately after the disaster, action medeor dispatched a team to the affected region to assess the most urgent needs in collaboration with local partner organizations and to plan initial relief efforts.

"Currently, there is a critical need for medical supplies, food, clean drinking water, tents, and blankets," reported action medeor employee Markus Bremers, who traveled to the region just one day after the earthquake and initiated much-needed assistance in coordination with local partners. "The mountain villages have been particularly hard hit. Many houses are almost completely destroyed, and the water supply has been disrupted. Families are living in tents or outdoors."

Based on the information gathered on-site, action medeor initiated emergency relief measures. Together with the partner organization IBC and other local partners, they are distributing relief packages containing hygiene items, household essentials, food, and wound care supplies. Additionally, they are procuring winter-resistant tents to support people during the upcoming cold months following the disaster.
