Since 2015, the population of Yemen has been suffering from the consequences of an ongoing armed conflict. Large parts of the healthcare system have collapsed, hunger and poverty are widespread, and well over half of the population depends on humanitarian assistance.

Since 2015, the population of Yemen has been suffering from the effects of an ongoing armed conflict. Violence, economic collapse, and political instability have plunged the country into one of the worst humanitarian crises of our time. The healthcare system is severely weakened: only around 60 percent of health facilities are fully functional, and many face acute shortages of staff, medicines, and electricity.

The food security situation remains dramatic. Approximately 18 million people are acutely affected by food insecurity, and in some regions catastrophic, famine‑like conditions prevail. Recurrent disease outbreaks further exacerbate the situation. Around two thirds of the population now depend on humanitarian assistance. Children are particularly hard hit.

Despite intermittent ceasefires and extensive international aid efforts, the humanitarian situation remains precarious, not least due to severe funding shortfalls that increasingly put life‑saving assistance programs at risk.

  • More than half of the population does not have enough food; over 2 million children under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition
  • Yemen has experienced multiple severe cholera epidemics; in 2016, more than 2 million people contracted the disease in what is considered the largest cholera outbreak in history
  • More than 22 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance
