Despite significant development aid and economic progress, it remains one of the poorest countries in the world.

After more than 14 years of armed conflict, large parts of Syria have been destroyed, and living conditions remain catastrophic for millions of people. The war that has been ongoing since 2011, along with the devastating earthquakes in February 2023, has triggered one of the largest humanitarian crises of our time.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed, and millions more have been injured. Currently, around 16.5 million people in Syria are in need of humanitarian assistance.

More than four to five million Syrians are living as refugees in neighboring countries, while approximately six to seven million people are internally displaced within Syria—many of them children. Today, Syria is among the countries with low human development.

Earthquake 2023: A catastrophe strikes the shaken country

In February 2023, Syria and neighboring Turkey were hit by a natural disaster: Several severe earthquakes brought further suffering and destruction to the lives of Syrians. The barely functioning healthcare system was unable to provide adequate care for the injured.

In numbers: The situation in Syria

  • In the Human Development Index (HDI), Syria ranks 162th out of 193
  • Around 90% percent of the population lives in poverty
  • More than 35% of people in Syria are undernourished
  • Despite ongoing supply challenges, national basic immunization coverage against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and tetanus among young children stands at around 70 percent, with significant regional disparities
  • More than four million Syrians have fled their home country, while around six million people are internally displaced—many of them children
  • Approximately 16.5 million residents are in need of humanitarian assistance

Emergency humanitarian aid and support for health facilities

action medeor has been active in Syria since the beginning of the civil war and regularly supports hospitals and healthcare facilities with medicines and medical supplies. In joint projects with local partner organizations, we are also committed to strengthening the healthcare system, for example by installing a CT scanner in a hospital or, in 2024, by supporting the construction of a medicine warehouse in the north of the country.

In response to the severe earthquakes in 2023, action medeor expanded its aid projects in the country together with partner organizations: Among other things, relief supplies were distributed in the affected regions and mobile medical teams were deployed to care for the people. These relief measures were carried out across borders and also benefited Syrian people in Turkey as well as the affected Turkish population.
