One week after the earthquake: action medeor expands aid in the earthquake region

One week after the severe earthquake in the Turkish-Syrian border region, the health aid organization action medeor is continuing to work at full speed to get as much aid as possible to the people. The aid organization has already sent a fact-finding team to the earthquake zone to assess the situation in various towns.

The distribution of thousands of hot meals, water and blankets has already begun. The aid is now being continued and intensified in various ways. Among other things, the construction of so-called “community shelters” is planned. “These are heated tents of 100 to 150 square meters in which people can warm up and which can serve as a contact point for food distribution and medical services,” Sid Peruvemba, spokesman for the board of action medeor, explains. Mobile health teams are also to be set up to visit people who are unable to reach a hospital. They will treat minor injuries on site and organize transport to hospital for more serious illnesses or injuries.

action medeor is working in the earthquake region with Turkish and Syrian partner organizations that have been active there for years. “In recent years, our humanitarian aid in the region has focused on caring for Syrian war refugees,” Peruvemba explains, “but now we are expanding these activities to include the care of earthquake victims.” The fact that action medeor and its partners have already been active in the region for years brings advantages: “We have established functioning processes in the medical care of people and in the local procurement of relief supplies, which we are now using for disaster relief,” Peruvemba descirbes. Particularly important: “As our partners are registered as aid organizations in both Turkey and Syria, we have good access routes for aid in Syria,” Peruvemba emphasizes, “which gives us an advantage in our humanitarian work.”

Because action medeor is excellently networked through its partners in the region, it has also decided to prioritize the local procurement of relief supplies. “This is currently the fastest way to organize aid for the people,” Peruvemba explains. In Syria in particular, action medeor sees major humanitarian challenges. In the Syrian opposition-controlled regions around Idlib and Aleppo, action medeor
is working with its partner organizations to support various hospitals and mobile clinics. “Our partners are now using up their stocks of medicines and medical equipment, and the first gaps are being filled as quickly as possible through local procurement,” Peruvemba points out. “The aid shipments from our medicine warehouse in Tönisvorst will then play a more important role in supplying the people in the coming months."
