As one of the most populous countries in the world, Pakistan is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and increasingly frequent extreme weather events.

Poverty and lack of access to government services

In the Human Development Index (HDI), which combines indicators of health, education, and living standards, Pakistan currently ranks 168th out of 193 countries. Increasing extreme weather events such as floods and heatwaves pose a major risk, especially for the poor rural population, and jeopardize the progress that has been made in recent years in the fight against poverty. Healthcare and the education system are also inadequate to provide the population with adequate care.

Climate change and the 2022 flood disaster

Pakistan is one of the countries most affected by the consequences of climate change. In the summer of 2022, exceptionally heavy monsoon rains led to devastating floods. 

Around one third of the country was submerged, approximately 33 million people were affected, and millions lost their homes and livelihoods.

In numbers: The situation in Pakistan

  • At least 28% of the population lives below the national poverty line
  • Only around two thirds of births are attended by trained medical staff
  • More than 20% of children under the age of five are underweight
  • About 59 out of 1,000 children die before their fifth birthday

Help in the disaster and sustainable support

In order to support the people of Pakistan, we need both: acute and rapid aid in the event of natural disasters, but also sustainable disaster prevention and better living conditions. Together with local partners, our work in Pakistan therefore has several pillars. Following the floods in 2022 - as with other natural disasters in previous years - action medeor provided rapid emergency aid, including the distribution of relief supplies, hygiene kits and food. In long-term projects, people in rural regions in particular are educated on topics such as proper behavior in the event of natural disasters, healthy nutrition, agriculture adapted to climate change and various health issues in order to achieve sustainable improvements in the living conditions of families.
