Pakistan Healthy livelihoods for remote rural communities in Pakistan Programs In rural southern Pakistan, many families live under difficult conditions. In remote villages of Sindh province, there is often a lack of clean drinking water, basic sanitation, educational opportunities, and secure sources of income. Poverty, recurring natural disasters, and inadequate infrastructure impair the health and future prospects of entire village communities. With the project “Healthy Communities – Bright Future,” action medeor, together with the local partner organization Participatory Village Development Programme (PVDP), supports 15 remote village communities in the Mirpurkhas district in sustainably improving their living conditions. The project’s approach is holistic: health, water and sanitation, food security, education, and disaster preparedness are strengthened together with the communities. A key focus is on access to clean drinking water and hygiene. Through the construction and rehabilitation of water points, sanitation facilities, and simple water treatment systems, as well as accompanying hygiene education, the risk of waterborne diseases is reduced. At the same time, the project promotes household food security and income opportunities. Training in kitchen gardening, poultry keeping, and animal health helps families improve their nutrition and generate additional income. Educational programs for adults and vocational training measures for young people strengthen basic skills and future prospects. Another important component is strengthening the self-organization of the village communities: local village committees are established and supported so that communities can manage their development processes independently in the long term. In addition, disaster preparedness measures are implemented to better prepare communities for floods and other crises.
