Nepal

Lack of infrastructure and health care as well as recurring natural disasters pose major challenges for Nepal.

Natural disasters and economic setbacks

In recent decades, Nepal's economy and society have had to cope with repeated setbacks: The civil war (1996 to 2006) severely set Nepal back in its economic development, followed by a series of dramatic earthquakes in 2015, in which around 9,000 people lost their lives. The coronavirus pandemic also hit Nepal hard. Another risk: Nepal is one of the countries that will be hit hardest by the effects of climate change worldwide: Melting glaciers in the Himalayas and changing rainy seasons are increasing the risk of natural disasters and making food production more difficult.

Despite these challenges and setbacks, there are also positive developments, including a significant improvement in the health of the Nepalese population in recent years. However, there are still huge differences between urban and rural areas, particularly in terms of healthcare and infrastructure, with remote rural regions often lacking basic services.

In numbers: The situation in Nepal

  • According to estimates from 2020, around 17% of the population continues to live in poverty, and the differences between urban and rural areas are great
  • About one in five children under the age of five is underweight
  • Less than one doctor cares for 100,000 people, compared to 4.5 in Germany
  • About 30 percent of adults are illiterate

From reconstruction to sustainable development cooperation

action medeor has been active in the country since the severe earthquake in Nepal in 2015. The first phase of emergency aid, in which action medeor helped in particular by providing medicines and medical supplies, has developed into long-term projects. Together with the local partner organization ECCA, action medeor is particularly active in remote mountain villages where the infrastructure and supply situation is still weak. The focus of the work here is on improving hygiene and sanitation in schools, accompanied by other measures in the areas of health and nutrition.
