Glacier avalanche triggers flash flood The full extent of the disaster in Nepal is still dramatic! According to consistent media reports, a glacier collapse is believed to have triggered the devastating flash flood in Nepal and Tibet. The glacial avalanche is said to have struck a tributary of the Bhotekoshi River, creating a flood wave of water, ice and debris which spread rapidly across the Himalayan nation, with dramatic consequences for the population. Photo: ECCA/action medeor 1 2 3 As things stand (as of 15 September 2026), over 1.300 people are reported to have died in Nepal alone, more than 5.600 are still missing. The districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading were particularly hard hit by the flash flood, according to reports from our partner Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness (ECCA) on the ground. One thing is clear: the people are now in dire need! action medeor provides aid funds action medeor has been working with the local organisation ECCA in the affected region for many years, including on improving water and sanitation supplies in remote mountain villages. Access to the project areas is currently severely restricted or cut off. Since the disaster struck, the teams from action medeor and ECCA have been in close contact to assess the current situation and needs and to plan initial relief measures. As a first step, action medeor provided 10,000 euros to support ECCA’s emergency aid. In the next phase, the “World’s Emergency Pharmacy” will make a further 50,000 euros available for additional relief efforts. “I know the affected regions well from my many visits there. When roads and bridges are destroyed, entire villages effectively lose access to essential services. This makes it all the more important to act quickly now and provide people with the essentials.” Sarah Weiß Responsible for the projects of action medeor in Asia and Middle East At present, the situation remains unclear, as the disaster-stricken region is cut off from the outside world – roads, power supplies and communications have been severely damaged. The aid funds are intended not only to provide survivors with drinking water and food, but also to restore water and sanitation services - particularly in healthcare facilities and collective accommodation. In the affected region of Bidur, relief supplies such as disinfectant and cleaning solutions, protective gloves, hygiene and sanitation kits, water filters, off-grid stoves, solar lamps and tents have already been distributed to displaced families and collective shelters by our partner ECCA – including, amongst other places, a hospital that is also serving as emergency accommodation for those affected by the floods. Our medical aid program is also exploring further options for providing urgently needed medications and medical equipment. Further activities will be planned and coordinated. Every bit of help counts in Nepal! Even before the flash flood, the people of Nepal were living in difficult circumstances in terms of both climate and infrastructure, due to the country’s geological features, which include steep valleys, scree slopes and glacial lakes. There is now great fear of further flash floods! Many of those affected who have survived have lost not only family members, but also friends and their homes. For them, every bit of help counts right now in providing essentials such as water, food, shelter and healthcare.
