Malawi

Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world, struggles with widespread malnutrition, inadequate health care and recurring natural disasters.

Natural disasters and poverty pose major challenges

The effects of climate change have long been a reality in Malawi: weather extremes such as long periods of drought, followed by floods and tropical cyclones are becoming increasingly frequent.

The consequences are worsening living conditions, increasing food shortages and the spread of diseases such as cholera. Children in particular suffer from severe malnutrition and a lack of access to healthcare and education.

In numbers: The situation in Malawi

  • About one fifth of the population is chronically malnourished
  • About a third of young children suffer from stunted growth due to malnutrition
  • Malawi ranks 174th out of 189 on the United Nations Human Development Index
  • About two million households are at risk of hunger and dependent on humanitarian aid

action medeor in Malawi: supplying medicines and training specialist staff

In addition to Tanzania, Malawi is the second African country in which action medeor has its own office. Since 2015, action medeor has been supplying healthcare facilities in the country with medicines and medical supplies from its own medicine warehouse in the capital Lilongwe. In order to be able to supply the hard-to-reach south of the country quickly and reliably, another medicine warehouse was opened in the city of Blantyre - supplemented by a training center for medical technicians

A team of local specialists in pharmacy, medical technology and logistics at the action medeor locations in Malawi works daily to improve healthcare for the people in the country and strengthen local structures.
