Sudan

An ongoing political conflict has triggered a dramatic humanitarian emergency.

The devastating consequences of the civil war

The renewed civil war in Sudan, which broke out in 2023, is claiming more and more lives. Millions of internally displaced people have hardly any access to food or medical care. The hunger crisis is worsening and diseases such as malaria and cholera are spreading. 70 to 80 percent of health facilities are permanently closed, and the few remaining hospitals and health stations are completely overloaded. There is a lack of medicines and medical equipment.

In numbers: The situation in Sudan

  • 24.8 million people are dependent on humanitarian aid
  • Almost every second child dies before reaching the age of five
  • More than ten million people have been displaced
  • Almost half of the population lives below the national poverty line
  • About 755,000 people are on the brink of starvation

Support for hospitals in Sudan

For many years, action medeor has regularly sent medical aid shipments to Sudan to support the work of the remaining health facilities.

One long-standing recipient of action medeor supplies is the Mother of Mercy Hospital in the Nuba Mountains on the border with South Sudan, a region where many internally displaced people seek protection and help. The Mother of Mercy Hospital is a potential point of contact for around two million people. Many treatments or operations are only available here for those in need - supported by medicines and medical supplies from action medeor.

"The need for medical treatment has increased enormously, but at the same time our resources are severely limited. Without donations and aid supplies, we would not be able to maintain operations."
