Full commitment against the hunger crisis

How we help families in Somalia lead healthier lives.

The past few years have been disastrous for the people in the village of Moyka. A prolonged drought that killed off livestock was followed by heavy rainfall. The Shabelle River overflowed, sweeping away houses and grain harvests. Many mothers work from dawn until dusk, yet still have to borrow money to feed their children. Together with our local partner WARDI, we provide help for self-help.

Defying Climate Change

“We distribute high-quality seeds and agricultural tools to farmers so that they are better protected against the consequences of climate change,” reports Hamida Yusuf Ali. The project coordinator advises locals on irrigation, fertilization, crop rotation, and pest control. Growing grains and vegetables enables many families, for the first time, to feed themselves without having to pay the high prices at the markets.

Livestock Brings Independence

Hamida and her team also distribute chickens and goats to particularly needy families and provide tips on animal husbandry and care. Eggs and milk help generate a modest income: whatever the families don’t consume themselves can be sold at the market.

WARDI is also active in healthcare: in mothers’ groups, women learn how to recognize acute malnutrition in infants and young children. They are taught how to prepare nutritious meals using homegrown products to prevent deficiency symptoms.

Diversity in Fields and on Plates

A balanced diet of grains, legumes, and vegetables helps prevent nutrient deficiencies. This is exactly where our projects come in: we train farmers to grow more varieties in their fields. “Thanks to WARDI, I harvest fresh vegetables every morning to cook for my children,” says farmer Ilamo Abdikadir. This variety helps her children develop healthily and protects the soil from becoming depleted.

Securing Nutrition Together

Whether urgently needed medicines, food, or hygiene supplies: action medeor provides support in crisis regions around the world. In Somalia, together with our partner WARDI, we promote agriculture so that families have enough to eat and can become self-sufficient. Training in water purification and hygiene, as well as the construction and rehabilitation of wells, complement these projects. This way, impoverished small-scale farmers gain improved and lasting access to clean water, helping to prevent infectious diseases.
