Social inequality, extreme poverty, ongoing conflicts and recurring extreme weather events have been exacerbating the situation for people in Somalia for years.
In addition to ongoing conflicts and unstable state structures, the persistent drought is a particular problem for the people of Somalia. In combination with recurring natural disasters, such as monsoon-like rainfall, the drought is the main reason why crop yields are failing and almost half of the population is acutely threatened by hunger.
As a result, immune systems are weakened, making it easy for diseases such as cholera and malaria to spread. Healthcare in the country is poorly developed, largely privatized and fee-based. Effective medication is only available to a very limited extent. Only a few people can afford medical treatment.
Together with our local partner organization WARDI, action medeor is committed to improving the health of the people in Somalia. This includes, for example, the provision of medicines and medical products as well as the establishment of health facilities in order to sustainably strengthen the health structures in the country.
Nutrition programs to combat malnutrition and undernourishment, especially among children, as well as agricultural measures such as the distribution of equipment and seeds to better equip farmers, also play a major role in helping the Somali population to lead a healthier life.
