After many years of dictatorship, the West African country is facing major challenges.
The population of Togo has not yet recovered from the political, social, and economic crises. Many people live in poverty, and many children suffer from hunger and preventable diseases. The government is making efforts to improve the social and economic situation in the country. However, a large share of the population still lives in poverty, and children continue to suffer from hunger and treatable illnesses.
Persistent poverty is driving especially young people to migrate to cities in search of better opportunities. There, however, they are often exposed to precarious living conditions, violence, and abuse. Girls and young women are particularly at risk: Having moved to cities in hopes of a better future, they frequently become dependent on men or are forced into prostitution.
action medeor has been active in Togo for many years with a particular focus on supporting girls and young women. Together with the local organization Petite Soeur à Soeur (PSAS), we have supported vocational training for young women and implemented awareness programs in the capital Lome in recent years. In 2024, a project will be implemented in the north of the country to support particularly vulnerable refugee women and girls in order to protect them from the widespread gender-based violence and also to improve hygiene provision.
In addition to these long-term development cooperation programs, action medeor regularly supports health facilities in Togo with medicines and medical supplies to help care for the poorest population groups.
