Improved healthcare for people in disaster and conflict affected regions

Since 2011, Libya has been suffering from ongoing conflicts and political instability, which has greatly affected the healthcare sector. The ongoing crisis has led to widespread displacement, significant damage to health infrastructure, and a severe shortage of medical supplies and trained healthcare personnel.

The regions of Derna and Kufra are particularly affected due to their geographical isolation and limited access to resources. In Derna, primary healthcare centers (PHCs) are in a dilapidated state after years of conflict, severely limiting their ability to provide basic health services. Mental health issues, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict, are a major concern, yet the facilities addressing these problems are inadequate.

The floods of autumn 2023 worsen the situation

The situation was further aggravated by Storm Daniel in 2023, which claimed over 4,000 lives and caused widespread destruction. In collaboration with partner organizations IBC and STACO, action medeor aims to implement a phased healthcare project to improve health infrastructure, enhance healthcare management capacities, and extend healthcare services to underserved communities through a mobile clinic.

The project: Strengthening the health system

Improving healthcare services is a crucial step towards stabilizing and rebuilding these communities. To this end, administrative and medical staff of healthcare facilities will be trained, three healthcare facilities will be renovated, and a mobile clinic will be operated, specifically targeting remote areas where people otherwise lack adequate healthcare services. This service is aimed at both the local population and Sudanese refugees, and will specifically reach out to emergency shelters and border crossings.

Sustainable improvement of healthcare services

The project will have significant and sustainable impacts on healthcare in Derna and Kufra: The training component will improve management and efficiency in healthcare facilities, while also enhancing the quality of medical care. The renovation of healthcare facilities will enable the provision of a wide range of high-quality healthcare services. The mobile clinic will also ensure that the most vulnerable populations have access to care.
