© action medeor / WARDI Info © action medeor / WARDI Somalia Emergency aid after drought and floods Programs The food crisis in Somalia is coming to a head: after four failed harvests in a row and an extreme rise in grain prices due to the war in Ukraine, many people in Somalia were already on the brink of famine at the beginning of 2023. The next disaster occurred in May 2023: heavy rainfall in Somalia and upstream Ethiopia caused flooding along the Shabelle River. Around 250,000 people had to leave their homes and many lost their crops and livelihoods again. The consequences for these families are dramatic: food insecurity has been part of everyday life for years. For many years, action medeor and its local partner organization WARDI have been working together to improve the nutritional situation of families in rural Somalia. Among other things, smallholder farmers are learning how to adapt their agriculture to drought and climate change. However, these adaptations take time - and the current combination of extreme drought, plagues of locusts, flooding and rising prices due to the war in Ukraine are creating an absolutely exceptional situation.
