The “Emergency Pharmacy of the World,” as action medeor is also known, is currently in talks with various German, international, and local NGOs. “The focus is on protective equipment and supplies, especially for medical personnel,” reports Emmanuel Limi, who manages several aid projects in the DR Congo for action medeor. “People working in healthcare facilities are particularly at risk during an outbreak like this because they may come into contact with many infected individuals,” Limi explains, “and at the same time, their work is especially critical right now to contain the spread of infection.” Over 20 years of engagement in the DR Congo At action medeor, efforts are currently underway to determine the needs on the ground and the best way to procure and deliver relief supplies. “Experience shows that personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves, and gowns is especially needed during such outbreaks,” Limi explains. Depending on the situation, supplies may be shipped from Germany, where action medeor operates a large pharmaceutical warehouse, or sourced locally within the African region. action medeor itself has been active in the DR Congo for more than twenty years, particularly in the South Kivu region, which borders the affected provinces of Ituri and North Kivu. “We must also prepare to ensure that our own local partners and staff are protected from the Ebola virus,” says Limi. Appropriate preparations are currently underway in this regard as well. Displacement movements increase the spread of the virus Eastern DR Congo, where both the Ebola-affected regions and action medeor’s project areas are located, has been suffering for years from conflict between armed rebel groups. People are fleeing the violence and leaving their home communities. “Many people are constantly moving from place to place; there is a very high level of mobility in the region overall,” Limi reports. “This can, of course, facilitate the spread of the virus. We want to do our part to ensure that this happens as little as possible.” Emmanuel Limi Responsible for the action medeor projects in Burundi and the DR Congo Anyone wishing to support the work of action medeor can do so by making a donation.
