Conclusion of our flood relief efforts in the Ahr Valley

A new day care facility has now been officially opened in Hönningen-Liers, where people in need of care can receive support and assistance. action medeor played a key role in supporting the construction of the building, which has now been completed as planned after a remarkably short construction period of just ten months.

With its modern approach, the ‘Mittendrin’ day care centre will in future provide much-needed relief for family carers as well as high-quality care for older people in the municipalities of Adenau and Altenahr. Both communities were particularly hard hit by the 2021 floods, as, amongst other things, care services in the region were severely disrupted.

The day care centre will be run by the Adenau-Altenahr Social Services Centre, whose chairman, Guido Nisius, once again expressed his gratitude for the support: “Without the help of action medeor from Tönisvorst, which played a key role in bringing this project to fruition, it would not have been possible to implement it in this form,” said Nisius at the opening ceremony.

First engagement in Germany

Following the 2021 flood disaster, action medeor had worked to restore the health infrastructure in the Ahr Valley that had been destroyed. It was the first time the organisation had provided emergency aid within Germany. The day care centre in Hönningen-Liers is one of action medeor’s final aid projects in the Ahr valley, which is now coming to a close. An apple tree from the apple town of Tönisvorst was presented at the opening of the new day care centre.

Sustainable Strengthening after the flood disaster

The day care will be opened from Monday to Friday and will be intended for people who are in need of support, care and social contacts at daytime, but who won't leave their homes. It is not only called "Mittendrin" (in englisch: in the middle), it is also located in the middle of the village Liers and in the middle of Adenau and Altenahr.

The day care center has space for 16 guests per day, but the guests can also make an appointment for individual care sessions. With the new facility, the care infrastructure in the region affected by the flood disaster will be sustainably strengthened, making an important contribution to regional provision.
