Humanitarian situation unclear after military coup: action medeor fears more difficult aid in Niger

Following the military coup in Niger, the options for humanitarian aid remain unclear. “We don't have a clear picture and are monitoring the situation,” Sid Peruvemba, spokesman for the board of action medeor, says.

The health aid organization has been active in humanitarian aid for Niger for years together with various partner organizations, but the last delivery of medical supplies only reached the country in mid-July. “The unclear political situation in Niger will also have an impact on the humanitarian situation in the country in the short term,” Peruvemba announces. Political upheavals such as the current one usually damage the existing supply routes for food and medical supplies. "We must therefore assume that the situation of the people in Niger will deteriorate. After all, almost four million people there are dependent on humanitarian aid."

action medeor and its partner organizations are now exploring the possibilities of maintaining existing aid programmes. “This is very difficult at the moment because the airspace is closed and the balance of power is unclear,” Peruvemba says. But preparations are being made to restart humanitarian aid as soon as possible.
