18 months of war in Ukraine: action medeor prepares for a harsh winter

One and a half years after the Russian attack on Ukraine, the humanitarian situation in the south of the country is more tense than ever - this is the assessment of the health aid organization action medeor, which has been active with humanitarian aid projects in southern Ukraine since the first months of the war.

“The people in the country are heading into the second winter of war, while at the same time attacks on cities such as Kherson, Odessa and Ismajil in southern Ukraine have increased significantly,” Sid Peruvemba, spokesman for the board of action medeor, explains. The aid organization is working with its local partners in these cities and the surrounding regions to help people in the greatest need, “albeit under increasingly difficult conditions”, Peruvemba says.

According to Peruvemba, the difficulties include the destruction of infrastructure as well as the shelling of aid workers. “When our people tried to help the people in the flooded area after the Kakhovka dam burst near Kherson, they were shot at,” Peruvemba says, “the shells hit just a few meters away from them.” The security situation for aid workers in Odessa has also worsened considerably. There, action medeor supports a social pharmacy that distributes medicines free of charge to those in need. “Just a few hundred meters from the pharmacy, rockets have hit in recent weeks,” Peruvemba recalls. “But we will still continue our aid,” he affirms.

At the same time, the shelling and the destruction of infrastructure are causing increasing problems in the region in terms of water and energy supply. “This will be a challenge, especially in view of the upcoming winter,” Peruvemba predicts. “We expect the humanitarian emergency to be greater this winter than last year.”

In order to prepare the winter aid at an early stage, action medeor is already busy procuring the necessary relief supplies. “It's about stoves, heating material and winter clothing,” Peruvemba sums up. The procurement of these relief supplies will begin in the coming weeks, and with the funds available so far, many people can be helped. “The support of our donors is a blessing for those in need, and it will be needed for years to come,” Peruvemba says, “so we are also grateful for any further donations.”
