“Functioning pharmaceutical structures are immensely important for a well-positioned healthcare system,” Angela Zeithammer, Honorary Managing Director of the action medeor Foundation, explains “because only with well-trained pharmaceutical staff can you ensure that the right medication is available at the right time for sick people.” A comparison between Germany and Tanzania shows just how different the structures can be: “In Germany, one pharmacist looks after around 1,500 people, whereas in Tanzania there is one pharmacist for every 32,000 inhabitants,” Zeithammer says. "Because there are too few specialists, people in Tanzania have fewer opportunities to receive good medical care. We want to change that."

The Felix Wiemes Memorial Prize therefore supports outstanding students at the School of Pharmacy at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. The three current prizewinners are James Clement Kapala, Samson Holowa Choga and Mbwana Shekivunge. Their studies focus on different aspects of pharmaceutical supply, such as the question of how efficient quality assurance and supply chain systems can improve the effectiveness and availability of medicines. What unites them is the desire to use their expertise to improve medical and pharmaceutical care in Tanzania and thus make an active contribution to strengthening the healthcare system.

The Felix Wiemes Foundation Fund, which is managed under the umbrella of the action medeor Foundation, is now supporting their commitment. “We are delighted to be able to support three outstanding young pharmacists in this way again this year,” Angela Zeithammer says.
