Despite unrest and political upheaval: action medeor continues to provide aid in Haiti

Despite the current unrest and political upheaval in Haiti, the health aid organization action medeor is maintaining its activities in the Caribbean country, albeit with restrictions and under special security precautions.

The “emergency pharmacy of the world”, as action medeor is also known, has been active in Haiti since 2010 and cooperates with various local aid organizations. In the town of Lamardelle, for example, the health aid organization supports a community clinic, particularly in the area of mother and child health. “However, this is currently happening under increasingly difficult conditions because the security situation on the ground has deteriorated extremely,” Markus Bremers, press spokesman for action medeor, says.

For example, the community clinic is currently waiting for an urgently needed new ultrasound machine, which was purchased with donations from action medeor. “However, the delivery of the device to the clinic is currently extremely delayed because even transports of humanitarian aid supplies are currently not safe and are being attacked,” Bremers explains. For this reason, several scheduled transports had to be canceled in the past. “The device is now parked in another clinic,” Bremers says. At least the operating training for the medical staff could be carried out there. “However, the training also had to be interrupted because there was gunfire outside the door,” Bremers reports.

According to action medeor, the security situation for patients and medical staff has been tense since 2022. “We have seen a drastic drop in the number of births at the clinic since 2022,” Bremers reports, “because many pregnant women are afraid of being attacked on their way to the hospital. Many therefore don't come to us with their health problems at all or much too late,” Bremers says. This is particularly regrettable because in previous years there had been a steady increase in medically assisted births. In the current situation, however, clinic operations can only be guaranteed to a limited extent. “A decision is made every day as to whether the clinic will open depending on the current security situation,” Bremers explains. “The local population is then informed via digital media that the clinic is open and that medical assistance is available.”

Haiti has been suffering from ongoing multiple crises for years. The state cannot guarantee its citizens security, armed gangs threaten the civilian population. In addition, there is an ongoing food crisis and extreme price increases. As a result, many people can no longer afford to go to hospital or avoid it due to the risk of being attacked or kidnapped. In rural areas in particular, basic healthcare is being used less and less as a result.
