A hospital at its limit

Civil war, humanitarian crisis, millions of internally displaced people: the Mother of Mercy Hospital is also experiencing growing hardship.

The brutal war in Sudan is never-ending and is claiming more and more victims among the civilian population. For many, the only option is to flee to the less affected regions. The Nuba Mountains, a poor region that until a few years ago was itself at the center of a bloody conflict, is now home to hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people. This is exacerbating the humanitarian situation in the Nuba Mountains. There is a lack of food and the need for medical treatment far exceeds the capacity of the few health stations still operating.

The Mother of Mercy Hospital is the most important hospital in the region

Despite all the current problems, Dr. Catena and his medical team are keeping their hospital up and running. Whether obstetrics, dentistry, malaria, leprosy or injuries from landmines: The Mother of Mercy is a potential point of contact for around two million people. Many treatments and operations are only available to people in need here. Dr. Catena and his team treat 500 inpatients and 200 outpatients every day.

Medicines and consumables are lacking

A few weeks ago, 40-year-old Saida was brought in bleeding profusely. She had accompanied her sick son-in-law on the journey to hospital when she fell on the way and seriously injured her leg. At the hospital, she received a life-saving blood transfusion and her leg was successfully operated on. In order for people like Saida to survive, the hospital is in urgent need of medical supplies. “The worst thing is when people die because we don't have antibiotics or bandages,” reports Catena. Situations like this are likely to become increasingly common in the coming months.
