But young midwives like Aminata are fighting day and night to save lives. A tragedy that changed everything When Aminata Bangura was twelve years old, something traumatic happened: her little sister died in the womb. No one knew why—there was no qualified person there who could have helped. Since then, Aminata knew: she wanted to become a midwife. Today, she fights day and night to spare other families the nightmare she once experienced. After completing her training at a midwifery school supported by action medeor, she returned to where her help is urgently needed: her home village. At night, only her phone gives light But even with her knowledge and experience, Aminata often faces seemingly unsolvable challenges: the village lacks electricity, equipment, and medical supplies. When Aminata is called to a birth at night, she has to hold her phone in one hand for light—while trying to safely deliver the baby with the other. "A headlamp would help me so much. Then I’d have both hands free again at night births to help mother and child." Aminata Bangura Besides a headlamp, Aminata and her colleague need many other things to ensure safe births: sterile supplies, stethoscopes to monitor mother and baby, vitamins and iron supplements to prevent bleeding. But many of these items are missing from the midwife’s bag they have to share. It becomes especially critical when both of them are needed at the same time. Not enough equipment for two midwives: Aminata shows what is available to her and her colleague at the station. Photo: action medeor Your donation makes the difference!
