DR Congo: Emergency aid after floods For many years now, action medeor has been active in the Democratic Republic of Congo, providing structural improvements in health care. The conflicts and crises in the country are rarely discussed unless the Pope is visiting. The recent floods with hundreds of deaths - again just a media side note. Our project region of Ruzizi, where we are strengthening the food security of 75 families, was also affected: Many fields were destroyed by the masses of water. action medeor quickly decided to provide emergency aid. A mobile clinic and medicines were provided to keep healthcare services running as well as possible. At the same time, the important program work continued and any damage was repaired as quickly as possible. Disaster preparedness in Pakistan In Pakistan, one of the most devastating flood disasters of this millennium occurred in late summer 2022. With a third of the entire country under water and 33 million people forced to leave their homes, reporting was catastrophically scarce. More than ten years ago, action medeor joined forces with local partners to strengthen disaster preparedness: among other things, disaster committees were set up and so-called Save Points were established, high places where people could seek refuge in the event of flooding. This measure helped to prevent the worst from happening. In addition, emergency aid measures were quickly implemented by the local partner organization PVDP. Branch in Malawi in the middle of the storm In Malawi, cyclone “Freddy” caused severe destruction in mid-March. More than 300 people lost their lives and buildings and roads were destroyed. There were reports, but mainly that “Freddy” broke several meteorological records. The disaster also struck the country in the midst of an ongoing cholera epidemic. “Even before the storm, hospitals were operating at maximum capacity and there was a shortage of essential medicines,” Rajab Lawe, Country Director of action medeor Malawi, explains. We have been represented in the country with our own locations since 2013 in order to sustainably strengthen the health structures there. This enabled us to provide rapid assistance after the storm and supply the hospitals with medicines and medical supplies from the local medicine warehouse.
