Unparalleled access to economic progress

Mexico is considered an emerging economy and ranks among the world’s 15 largest economies. However, economic progress does not benefit all segments of the population equally. Crime and corruption hinder development, particularly in rural areas and among Indigenous communities that have limited access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Following the death of the powerful drug lord and CJNG cartel leader “El Mencho” on 22 February 2026, severe unrest erupted in several parts of the country. Armed groups blocked roads, set vehicles and businesses on fire, and engaged in gun battles with security forces. Further regional escalations cannot be ruled out.

In addition, climate change is exacerbating living conditions for many people. Mexico is affected by tropical storms and flooding as well as by increasing droughts and heatwaves. These extreme weather events pose a particularly serious risk to rural regions, where many people depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.

In numbers: The situation in Mexico

  • Nearly 30% of the population lives below the national poverty line
  • Not even half of the population has access to social security 
  • About 43% of the population has access to safely managed drinking water, and approximately 63% have access to safely managed sanitation
  • At least 17% of urban residents live in slums or informal settlements 

Mexico: a transit country for people on the move

Mexico is both a recipient country and a transit country for a growing number of refugees and migrants from various Latin American countries. The tense situation in the border region with the US as well as the situation of refugees in the country present the Mexican government with political and humanitarian challenges.

In successfully completed projects, action medeor has worked with local project partners to improve healthcare, including the construction of a health center. In the future, a commitment specifically for people on the run is planned.
