Crime, social inequality and migration movements pose challenges for the population of Mexico.
In economic terms, Mexico is classified as an emerging country and its economy is the 15th largest in the world. However, the economic upturn has not reached all sections of the population equally. Crime and corruption are hampering development and rural and indigenous population groups in particular have significantly poorer access to services and infrastructure.
Climate change is another increasing risk for the Mexican population: The country is susceptible to flooding and tropical storms as well as increasing heat waves and droughts. These increasing weather extremes pose a major risk, particularly for rural regions where many people live from agriculture.
Mexico is both a recipient country and a transit country for a growing number of refugees and migrants from various Latin American countries. The tense situation in the border region with the US as well as the situation of refugees in the country present the Mexican government with political and humanitarian challenges.
