DR Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo has been suffering from severe conflicts, a lack of government services and recurring natural disasters for years.

Poverty, hunger & violence

Decades of violent conflict, weak state structures, extreme poverty, and recurring natural disasters shape the daily lives of millions of people. The situation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo escalated once again in 2025, in particular due to offensives by M23/AFC M23, leading to massive new waves of displacement.

The suffering of the population is further intensified by extreme weather events such as severe flooding, which destroy crops, wash away homes, and promote the spread of diseases such as cholera and malaria. Epidemics including cholera, mpox, and measles, as well as climate shocks, further worsen the situation. Despite some movements of return, the humanitarian situation remains highly fragile.

In numbers: The situation in the DR Congo

  • More than seven million internally displaced people
  • Approximately half a million refugees from neighboring countries
  • More than one million Congolese have sought refuge in neighboring countries, particularly in Uganda
  • According to the United Nations, over 21 million people in the DRC are in need of humanitarian assistance
  • More than 60% of the Congolese population lives in extreme poverty
  • Approximately 30% are considered chronically undernourished
  • About one in twelve children dies before their fifth birthday

Health care, sanitation & nutrition programs

In 2015, action medeor expanded its aid in the Congo and facilitated an emergency aid program for Burundian refugees. This included improving hygiene conditions and the provision of drinking water and healthcare in the refugee camps.

In addition, action medeor - together with its partner organizations AFPDE and AEO/CNA - has been able to set up health stations in recent years and thus significantly improve the care of sick people as well as mother-child health. We are combating hunger in the region with nutrition programs, the provision of seeds and high-calorie food in the event of disasters. After natural disasters, action medeor also helps to replant destroyed fields and rebuild sanitary facilities and health centers.

"Thanks to our many years of work, we can adapt aid measures flexibly and quickly to current needs - this is particularly important in acute disasters. But we also keep an eye on long-term projects. The most important thing is that our aid continues!"
