Community health and reconstruction following Typhoon Uwan in the Philippines Programs The province of Aurora, on the Pacific coast of the Philippines, is regularly affected by typhoons and other climate-related natural hazards. Super Typhoon Uwan caused considerable damage to the region’s coastal communities in late 2025. Houses, farmland and fishing equipment have been destroyed, causing many families to lose their main means of subsistence, income and food sources. At the same time, existing restrictions on access to healthcare services have been further exacerbated. Many of the affected communities are located in remote areas where healthcare, transport and other essential services are only available to a limited extent. Families often have to travel long distances to seek medical help. To strengthen the health and resilience of the affected population, action medeor, together with its Philippine partner organisation CDRC, is supporting the expansion of community-based health structures and the restoration of livelihoods in three barangays in the municipality of Dingalan. As part of the project, 60 community members are being trained as local health workers and provided with basic medical equipment to strengthen health literacy and local health capacities directly within hard-to-reach communities. In addition, particularly vulnerable households receive hygiene kits to help prevent health risks. At the same time, farming households are being supported with seeds, tools and technical assistance, whilst fishing families are being helped to rebuild destroyed fishing boats. Restoring incomes and food production makes an important contribution to food security and, consequently, to the health of the families affected.
