Earthquake relief and rehabilitation

On September 8, 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 occurred about 50 miles south of Marrakesh, causing significant damage in and around Marrakesh as well as in the remote villages and towns of the region.

According to reports, there were nearly 3,000 deaths and over 5,600 injuries. The remote mountainous regions were and continue to be particularly affected: many people live in traditional clay houses, many of which were severely damaged or even completely destroyed by the earthquake.

The main goal of the project by action medeor and the partner organizations IBC, Al Amal Volunteers, and Amal Women's Training Center is to provide hygiene items, blankets, mattresses, warm clothing, sanitary facilities, and tents to families particularly affected by the impact of the earthquake during the first phase.

The second phase of the project focuses on rebuilding livelihoods, providing a sustainable source of income, and ensuring food security for the affected families. The earthquake significantly disrupted the livelihoods of many families. With the destruction of homes and properties, many lost their primary sources of income, whether it was agricultural land, livestock, or small businesses. The loss of these economic resources has greatly impaired their ability to provide for themselves and their families.

To provide sustainable support, the families will be helped to optimize the cultivation of local crops, establish or reestablish beekeeping, and restore the livestock lost due to the earthquake. These measures aim to ensure a sustainable income for the villagers and to create new products and distribution channels to improve the economic situation of the people in the region.
