Between January and August 2024 alone, 4,779 suspected cases and 31 deaths were reported for the province of South Kivu in DR Congo, with a high number of unreported cases expected. According to the WHO, 63% of all suspected cases reported in DR Congo and 80% of all deaths involve children. Children under one year of age are four times more likely to die from the disease than children over 15 years old, according to the WHO. Furthermore, there are warnings of a potential international spread of the virus. In response to this emergency, action medeor, together with its local partner organization AEO/CNA, is implementing an emergency relief project. Selected healthcare facilities are being equipped with appropriate protective materials (infection prevention kits, personal protective materials, hygiene kits, disinfectants, and handwashing stations), and healthcare personnel are being trained in infection prevention and control (IPC), thereby improving hygiene and protective measures in medical facilities. Additionally, the provision of medicines and medical equipment and the establishment of isolation facilities for infected individuals ensure adequate medical care for those affected. Awareness campaigns for the local population about possible transmission routes and preventive measures against the Mpox virus, as well as sensitizing community health workers, contribute to raising public health awareness and reducing further transmissions in the region. Since action medeor and the local partner organizations are already implementing a project to improve the health of refugees, internally displaced persons, and the local host population in South Kivu, the team of the partner organization AEO/CNA has extensive experience with the target group in the two health zones of Kaniola and Nyantende (South Kivu) and excellent contacts with healthcare facilities and authorities. Additionally, AEO/CNA operates two of its own hospitals in the project region, making it well acquainted with the living realities of the target group. For this reason, the emergency measures to contain the Mpox virus are being implemented in the same health zones (Nyantende, Kaniola) as in the existing project, as well as in two neighboring health zones (Ibanda, Miti-Murhesa), which report particularly high case numbers.
