Strengthening the health system in northwestern Syria

Ongoing fighting in northwestern Syria and the destruction caused by the 2023 earthquake have brought the already fragile healthcare system in the region to a standstill in some areas. Large parts of the population are denied access to basic medical care.

The Syrian civilian population is suffering immensely from the consequences of the civil war, which has caused one of the greatest humanitarian disasters of recent decades since the crisis began in 2011. More than half of the Syrian population is displaced. Media coverage of the war has significantly decreased in recent years, but the fighting continues and even intensified significantly in 2023. The northwestern regions, in particular, near the Turkish border, are heavily affected by the fighting. There is hardly any money left for healthcare. In addition to severe underfunding, hospitals and clinics are also struggling with significant damage to healthcare infrastructure caused by the 2023 earthquake.

The consequences: The money available for operating healthcare facilities is insufficient. Essential health programs, including those focused on maternal and child health or infectious diseases, have to be scaled back. The civilian population in northwestern Syria, already under severe strain due to ongoing fighting, now faces a lack of essential medical care. Visiting distant hospitals is unaffordable for most and often impossible due to health limitations. Maintaining the operation of hospitals and clinics on the ground in the conflict areas of northwestern Syria is therefore crucial.

Action medeor, together with its project partner, the Independent Doctors Association, is committed to ensuring the continued operation of key healthcare facilities. Over one million people live in the project region, for whom the project could provide access to medical care. Specifically, action medeor is funding operational and personnel costs for prioritized healthcare facilities so they can continue to provide life-saving medical services. Given the destroyed infrastructure and precarious security situation, it is vital that these facilities remain operational to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population and protect the health of people in the region.
