Construction of a medicine warehouse in northwest Syria

Millions of people in north-west Syria are dependent on humanitarian aid. The region is suffering from the long-lasting effects of the civil war, serious economic problems and is still struggling with the devastating effects of the earthquake in February 2023.

Restoration of the destroyed infrastructure and health sector is progressing slowly. Many hospitals and health centers are either completely destroyed or only function to a limited extent. The lack of essential medicines, medical equipment and staff is further exacerbating the situation. The health situation of the people is worrying: diseases continue to spread; chronic diseases are responsible for almost 75% of all deaths.

action medeor supports the development of medical infrastructure in Syria and contributes to better healthcare. In northwest Syria, for example, a central medicine warehouse of 4000 m² is being built to provide the basis for health care for thousands of people in the region. It will be located in Azaz, which is close to one of the few border crossings into Turkey - a strategic location for the efficient distribution of medicine supplies from Turkey to all healthcare facilities.

Our project partner IDA (Independent Doctors Association)  works throughout northwest Syria (Aleppo and Idlib Governorate) and currently operates a total of 4 hospitals, 25 primary health care facilities and 9 mobile clinics, providing around 55% of health services in the region. action medeor has been working with IDA since the earthquake disaster in early 2023, including the delivery of medicines and the procurement of medical equipment.

The humanitarian situation in Syria can now be counted among the "forgotten crises". Humanitarian needs have not decreased for more than 13 years - the consequences of the earthquake in early 2023 have further exacerbated the precarious situation of the local population and the millions of internally displaced persons. However, funding for the humanitarian sector is in sharp decline - many of the NGOs working in Syria are facing funding problems.
