Under the slogan ‘Knitting for a good cause’, the mother-and-daughter duo make cheerful socks, warm gloves and colourful scarves, with the proceeds from their sale going towards action medeor’s global emergency and disaster relief work. And it’s been a great success: in recent years, they have raised almost 7,000 euros. “An old lady has to knit for a long time to raise that much,” jokes 78-year-old Hermine Franken.

A native of Tönisvorst, she has felt a connection to the Tönisvorst-based charity for decades. Even in her younger years, she volunteered for action medeor, helping to sort donations of medicines. She is all the more delighted today to be able to put her hobby to such good use for the work of action medeor. This summer, Hermine Franken and Hildegard Goumans have once again been hard at work. Using their own and donated wool, they have knitted around 150 pairs of socks, as well as gloves and scarves.

The high-quality knitted items, available in various sizes, are now on sale at Electra Jarren’s shop on Ellenstraße in Kempen. The little basket filled with these cheerful woollen items has long since become a familiar sight there. A fixed price is charged for the handmade pieces. However, customers often prove to be particularly generous. “Most people pay more when they hear that all the proceeds are donated to action medeor,” reports Angelika Jarren, who has been happy to support the initiative from the very beginning.

To ensure that this successful project can continue in the future, Angelika Jarren would be delighted to receive donations of wool. Left-overs of four-ply and six-ply sock yarn are particularly welcome. “I’d be happy to accept these in the shop,” she says. After all, she hopes there will be another “Socks for a Good Cause” initiative next year.
