Press action medeor

During a guided tour of the medicines warehouse in Tönisvorst, action medeor President Siegfried Thomaßen briefed the guests on the organisation of the nearly 400 aid consignments that have been sent to Ukraine since February 2022. For the ‘World’s Emergency Pharmacy’, as action medeor is also known, the aid mission in Ukraine is the largest in the charity’s history.

Thomaßen shared some impressive figures with Makeiev and Steinmetz: since 2022, action medeor has delivered more than 1,160 tonnes of aid supplies, worth around 16.5 million euros, to Ukraine, supplying around 200 healthcare facilities across the country. Alongside urgently needed medicines, mobile ultrasound and X-ray machines – and even entire ambulances – were dispatched from Tönisvorst to Ukraine. In addition, through its humanitarian projects, particularly in the south of the country, the aid organisation has supported several hundred thousand people with medicines, winter aid, drinking water and psychological support. And this aid is set to be expanded further in the near future: together with the Johanniter, action medeor has launched another major project aimed at further strengthening healthcare provision in Ukraine. Funded by the Federal Foreign Office, the project will reach a total of around 160,000 people across the country, but primarily in areas close to the front line.

Following his visit to action medeor, Ambassador Makeiev expressed his admiration: “I am inspired by what is being done here for the people in my home country. I would like to thank action medeor and its staff, as well as everyone whose donations make this work possible, on behalf of my fellow countrymen,” the ambassador explained. “This form of aid and solidarity is vital for the survival of the Ukrainian people.”

Jürgen Steinmetz added: “Back then, after the outbreak of the war, we immediately started thinking about how we, as the business community, could help the people and businesses in Ukraine and here at home. We established a wide range of contacts and developed ways to provide support,” said Steinmetz. “It is also about fostering economic relations and supporting the reconstruction process.

For action medeor, the ambassador’s visit was a great honour, as President Siegfried Thomaßen emphasised: “We regard it as a great mark of appreciation that Ambassador Makeiev visited our charity and showed such interest in our work. At the same time, we have learnt that our aid will continue to be urgently needed in Ukraine in the future. That is why action medeor will continue to play its part in ensuring access to medicines and healthcare for the people of Ukraine.”
