action medeor provides 10,000 euros in emergency aid for Colombia following the earthquake

Following the devastating earthquake in Colombia, the medical aid organization action medeor is making 10,000 euros available to support humanitarian relief efforts in the Latin American country.

action medeor will use the €10,000 in emergency funding to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the earthquake on the ground.

“We have been implementing humanitarian projects in the earthquake-affected region for more than 15 years. We know the area and our local partners there very well,” said Angela Zeithammer, Board Member for Fundraising and Communications at action medeor. “We have already been able to contact our partners, who have reported widespread destruction in the cities,” Zeithammer explained.

In the city of Cali, where one of action medeor’s partner organizations is headquartered, many buildings have collapsed and numerous people are still missing beneath the rubble.

“However, we do not yet have a clear picture of the situation in the rural areas,” Zeithammer said. “We must also fear that not all villages will be immediately accessible, as roads and infrastructure have been damaged by the earthquake.”

According to action medeor, the situation may be particularly challenging for many low-income families living on the outskirts of cities. “Most of these people live in informal settlements, which are often built on hillsides and slopes. We hope there have been no landslides in these areas,” Zeithammer said. The organization is currently working to gain a more comprehensive assessment of conditions on the ground.

The emergency funding will be used to support earthquake survivors directly in the affected areas. “At this stage, the focus is on basic needs: shelter, food, water, hygiene, and healthcare,” said Zeithammer.

Anyone wishing to support the work of action medeor can do so by making a donation. Donations can be made online at www.medeor.de, where donors can also provide their address to receive a donation receipt.
