Four Years of War in the Ukraine Press releases 20 February 2026 action medeor, Europe’s largest humanitarian aid organization for medical supplies based in Tönisvorst, warns of waning solidarity ahead of the anniversary of the war in Ukraine. “In the fourth winter of the war - the coldest in years - the hardship faced by the people in Ukraine is greater than ever,” says Markus Bremers, press spokesperson for action medeor. “We have received tremendous support from our donors, particularly for emergency aid in Ukraine. But even so, with the funds currently available, we will only be able to finance many of our projects until the end of the year - after that, our budgets will be exhausted,” warns Bremers, who himself was in Ukraine just a few weeks ago to see the situation firsthand. “I saw how urgently help is needed there,” Bremers adds. “That is why, especially in these days, we are once again making a strong appeal for donations so that aid for the people of Ukraine can continue.” Over 1,100 medical relief supplies from Tönisvorst for Ukraine For the organisation known as the “World’s Emergency Pharmacy,” as action medeor is often called, the relief mission for Ukraine has been the largest operation in the organization’s more than 60-year history. Since February 2022, action medeor has delivered around 1,140 tonnes of medical relief supplies worth approximately 22 million Euros to about 190 hospitals across the country. In southern Ukraine, action medeor has also set up its own medicine distribution systems in cooperation with local partners. “In the regions of Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kherson, we distribute medicines free of charge to people in need. Using mobile pharmacies, laboratories, and clinics, we also reach people in villages close to the front lines, where there is no remaining infrastructure at all,” Bremers reports. No heating. No electricity. No running water. Bremers himself visited these villages in recent weeks. “People there are living in bitter cold without heating, without electricity, and some even without running water,” he says. Added to this is the constant stress caused by military threats, nighttime attacks, and worries about family members. “Living under such conditions makes people ill,” Bremers sums up. Aid workers on the ground are currently seeing an increase in chronic illnesses - not only among the elderly, but increasingly among children as well. “These people need medicines to survive,” Bremers stresses. “If the medicines are missing, it becomes a matter of life and death.” However, medicines are not only essential - they are also expensive. A race against time “Of course our assistance costs money. And right now, we are racing against time, because the financial resources available for this and other humanitarian projects are limited,” Bremers explains. “And yet, we want to try to find a way to continue. That is why we are once again calling on people to support Ukraine.” Anyone wishing to support the work of action medeor can do so by making a donation.
