Bottle deposits for action medeor's emergency aid Press releases 09 July 2025 For eleven years now, store manager Heribert Alschbach and the team at the Rewe store in Süchteln have been supporting the bottle deposit campaign of the health organization action medeor – but even the store manager is amazed by the amount that has been donated over this time: customers at the Heidweg location have dropped deposit vouchers worth more than 20,000 euros into the small mailbox next to the bottle return machine over the years. Klaus Kayser, who has voluntarily overseen the campaign at the Süchteln store for action medeor from the beginning, is also pleased with the donation result. “20,000 euros is an impressive amount,” says the 77-year-old, “and the fact that we reached it with the small amounts often found on these vouchers is truly remarkable.” Not only customers support the campaign, but also the store employees drop their deposit vouchers into the small box next to the bottle return machine. “There are so many people in this world who need help, and we do too little good,” says Heribert Alschbach. “That’s why we are all very happy to support the donation campaign for the work of action medeor.” The store manager finds it important to help people in need continuously and sustainably. “The work of action medeor is not just a drop in the ocean, but long-term aid,” says Alschbach. In fact, for more than 60 years, action medeor has been supplying health facilities around the world with life-saving medicines and medical equipment. In addition, the health organization based in Tönisvorst supports the training of healthcare professionals in countries of the Global South and promotes more than 40 health projects each year, aiming for long-term improvements through prevention and the development of local structures. The aid is mainly funded through donations. The deposit voucher campaign contributes to this effort. It started in 2012 in two markets in Tönisvorst. Today, ten stores participate in the campaign. Volunteers empty the boxes, redeem the vouchers, and transfer the money to the donation account of the health organization. To date, more than 317,000 euros have been raised for global emergency aid. The idea for the campaign came 13 years ago from trainees at action medeor who saw an exhibition on the topic of “Clean Water” in the foyer of the pharmaceutical aid organization. The young people proposed collecting bottle deposits in Tönisvorst and using the proceeds to provide access to clean drinking water for people in countries where it is not readily available.
