Retail association and action medeor cooperate: Emergency aid from the Lower Rhine Area enters the next phase

For the past ten years, the Retail Association NRW Krefeld-Kempen-Viersen, together with over 100 companies in the region, has supported action medeor’s global emergency and disaster relief efforts.

In this anniversary year, the commitment enters its next phase: A new donation campaign titled “Emergency Aid from the Lower Rhine” aims to provide people affected by disasters with essential medicines, humanitarian supplies, clean water, and vital food. Together, the Retail Association and action medeor looked back on the past ten years and at the same time presented the new campaign concept.

Right at the start of the partnership in 2015, they went all in: The Retail Association mobilized over 300 retail and service businesses to set up donation boxes from action medeor. Around 11,000 euros were raised within a year through donations from customers. In the following years, the campaign continued, albeit on a somewhat smaller scale. In total, over 40,000 euros were collected to support action medeor’s aid for people in need.

With the new campaign starting these days, the focus of the aid is being slightly adjusted. “In the past ten years, we used the donated money to fund medical aid packages shipped from Germany,” reports Angela Zeithammer, board member of action medeor. “With the new campaign, we also want to finance rapid assistance directly on site and expand the scope of the aid. In addition to medicines, supplies such as blankets or tents, clean water, and food will also be funded. This enables us to respond even faster and more flexibly to specific emergencies following a disaster,” says Zeithammer.

As the new campaign launches, even more companies are being encouraged to take part. “We want to renew our call to businesses in Krefeld, Kempen, Viersen, Nettetal, Brüggen, Schwalmtal, Willich, and Tönisvorst to participate in this initiative, which is truly about helping people in dire need,” explains Hartmut Janßen, chairman of the Retail Association. In recent days, members of the association have already been contacted and informed about the campaign. “The concept is actually quite simple: if many give a little, a lot can be achieved in the end,” summarizes Markus Ottersbach, managing director of the Retail Association.

To raise awareness for the new campaign, volunteers from action medeor will be visiting local businesses over the coming days to ask if they would be willing to place the new donation boxes featuring the campaign logo. Freshly printed flyers will also be distributed, clearly explaining the campaign and its purpose.
