Flood relief in the Ahr Valley: Dismantling of medical containers and construction of day care facility

Four years after the flood disaster in western Germany, the medical aid organization action medeor has completed most of its relief projects in the flood-affected regions.

In the Ahr Valley, a container facility has now been dismantled. Since late summer 2021, it initially housed a medical practice and a pharmacy to provide medical care to the population after the flood disaster. Later, the containers were used to accommodate several psychotherapy practices — again due to the increased demand for therapy services after the flood.

A few weeks ago, the containers were dismantled and the site was restored to its original state. The container facility, which now belongs to the municipality of Kalenborn, was rebuilt at a new location and will temporarily be used by vocational students of the Ahrtal School, whose original site in Altenburg was destroyed by the flood. The container facility now serves as a specialized room for career orientation for the students. Later, the municipality of Kalenborn plans to convert it into a youth center.

For action medeor, the relocation of the container facility also marks the conclusion of the project. “With these temporary spaces, we made an important contribution to healthcare in the region. With the dismantling of the facility at Kalenborner Höhe, this project is now completed for us,” explained Markus Bremers, press spokesperson for action medeor.

While a health project is coming to an end in Kalenborn, another project a few kilometers upstream is currently under construction. Here too, action medeor is significantly involved, as a day care facility of the Adenau-Altenahr social station is currently being built in Hönningen-Liers with support from the aid organization. The shell construction is progressing rapidly, and the topping-out ceremony for the building — which will offer 16 day care places on a 300-square-meter area — is scheduled for mid-May. “The flood disaster in 2021 also significantly worsened the situation for people in need of care and caregivers in the Ahr Valley — the distances to care facilities are long,” explained Bremers, describing the background of the project. “The day care center is intended to provide noticeable relief for people and contribute to structural improvements in the care sector.”

Both the health project in Kalenborn and the care project in Liers were financed in part through donations from the alliance “Aktion Deutschland Hilft,” of which action medeor is a member.
