After the earthquake in Myanmar: action medeor helps with mobile clinic and temporary houses

After the devastating earthquake in Myanmar, the aid organization action medeor has initiated emergency assistance for the people affected by the disaster.

Together with a local partner organization, the "World’s Emergency Pharmacy," as action medeor is also known, will send a mobile clinic to rural earthquake-affected regions to assist the people there. "The mobile team consists of local staff and is already on-site. Further aid we are currently organizing includes the provision of food, drinking water, and temporary shelters in more than 20 villages around the epicenter of the earthquake," explains Sid Peruvemba, spokesperson for action medeor's board.

To bring support from Germany to the affected people as quickly as possible, action medeor has provided an emergency fund of 100,000 euros, which is now available to local helpers. "With this, we will procure the necessary medicines and relief supplies as locally and closely as possible," says Peruvemba. This also led to the decision not to send relief shipments from Germany for the time being. "We have decided to focus on sourcing relief supplies near the affected region," Peruvemba explains. Two key factors influenced this decision: "Firstly, it would take a very long time to transport aid supplies from Germany to Myanmar. Secondly, local procurement is much better suited to the needs and capacities in Myanmar."

Together with its local partners, action medeor is active in the Inle and Sagaing regions, which are located directly in the earthquake zone. Many surrounding hospitals have been partially destroyed, and in addition to medical care, access to drinking water is currently a major challenge. "The earthquake has destroyed or damaged existing infrastructure, so medicines, food, and water now need to be brought into the affected regions from outside," says Peruvemba. Out of fear of further quakes, most people are also sleeping outdoors—many of them have lost their homes due to the disaster.

"Together with our partners, we have therefore begun providing temporary shelters—simple bamboo houses that offer families at least some protection for the transition period."
